Related Volunteer Experience

During my high school senior year I attended a co-op class. My placement was at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital. My placement was on a Healthy Aging and Rehabilitation unit. I learned basic nursing skills such as personal care, how to deal with new patients, what tasks the Registered Nurses and Licensed Practical Nurses did daily. I got to know the patients.

Daily Activities at Co-op

I witnessed the care the nurses provide the patients and I would check to see if the patients needed anything. I would restock medical supplies, clean rooms and make beds, bring patients to the dinning room area for breakfast and lunch, set up meal trays and feed the patents.

Feelings About My Co-op Experience

I enjoyed my time spent at the Dr. Everett Chalmers hospital with the patients and staff. It was a great learning experience and it confirmed my plan on wanting to attend nursing school. During my co-op experience I found that it was fulfilling to help others making their hospital stay just a little bit better. Working with the patients made me realize I wanted to become a rehab nurse because helping people do things they could not do before feels rewarding. Overall, I enjoyed making the patients laugh and smile.

 Why I Chose Nursing

I have wanted to become a nurse since I was a young child. I have a condition called Hydrocephalus. This has led to 12 brain surgeries and many complicated visits to hospitals and doctors offices. Having struggled with this all my life and seeing the effects it has had on my family I decided I wanted to pursue a career in nursing. Seeing the role that nurses played in the care of patients in their toughest times made me decide that is something I would want to do. Other motivating factors such as my mom graduating from the nursing program at the University of New Brunswick and my Co-op experience has also played a role in the decision of becoming a nurse. I want to make a difference in peoples lives in my community.

Why I Would Make a Good Nurse

I have always enjoyed helping people who are sick or in need. Skills that would make me a good nurse are: I am caring, show compassion towards others in need, organized, patent, understand were the patients are coming from based off of my own personal experiences in the healthcare system, outgoing, willing to work and do my part, good communication skills, and always putting others needs before my own.
